Complete Setup Guide

1

Unbox Your Ledger Device

When you receive your Ledger hardware wallet, the first step is to carefully unbox your device and verify its authenticity. Inside the box, you should find your Ledger device, a USB cable, recovery sheet cards, and getting started documentation. It's crucial to ensure that the device packaging is intact and has not been tampered with, as this is your first line of defense against potential security threats.

Check that all security seals are unbroken and that the device appears to be in its original condition. If anything seems suspicious or if the packaging appears to have been opened, do not proceed with the setup and contact Ledger support immediately. Your security depends on starting with a genuine, untampered device.

What's in the box:

  • • Ledger hardware wallet device
  • • USB Type-C cable (or USB-C to USB-A)
  • • Recovery phrase cards (3 cards)
  • • Getting started leaflet
  • • Keychain and lanyard (device dependent)
2

Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official companion application that allows you to manage your cryptocurrency assets securely. This software serves as the interface between your Ledger device and the blockchain networks, enabling you to send, receive, and manage your digital assets while keeping your private keys safely stored on your hardware wallet.

To ensure maximum security, always download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website at ledger.com. Avoid downloading from third-party sources, as malicious versions of the software could compromise your security. The application is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android platforms, providing flexibility in how you manage your cryptocurrency portfolio.

Mobile App

3

Initialize Your Device

Device initialization is the most critical step in securing your cryptocurrency assets. During this process, you'll create a unique PIN code and generate a recovery phrase that serves as the master key to your digital wealth. This recovery phrase, consisting of 24 randomly generated words, is mathematically unique and provides access to all your cryptocurrency accounts across different blockchain networks.

Connect your Ledger device to your computer using the provided USB cable and power it on. Follow the on-screen instructions to choose your preferred language, set up your PIN code (4-8 digits), and generate your recovery phrase. The device will display each word of your recovery phrase one by one – write them down in the exact order shown on the provided recovery cards.

PIN Code Best Practices:

  • • Use 8 digits for maximum security
  • • Avoid obvious patterns (1234, birth year)
  • • Don't use the same PIN as other devices
  • • Memorize it – never write it down
  • • You have 3 attempts before device resets
4

Secure Your Recovery Phrase

Your 24-word recovery phrase is the most important element of your cryptocurrency security setup. This phrase can restore access to all your digital assets if your Ledger device is lost, stolen, or damaged. Anyone who gains access to your recovery phrase has complete control over your cryptocurrency, making its secure storage absolutely critical for protecting your financial future.

Write down each word clearly and legibly on the provided recovery cards, double-checking the spelling and order. Never store your recovery phrase digitally – no photos, no cloud storage, no password managers, and no digital documents. Consider creating multiple physical copies stored in separate secure locations, such as safety deposit boxes or fireproof safes, to protect against theft, fire, or other disasters.

Critical Security Warning:

  • • Never share your recovery phrase with anyone
  • • Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase
  • • Don't store it on any connected device
  • • Verify the word order multiple times
  • • Store copies in separate physical locations
5

Install Cryptocurrency Apps

Once your device is initialized and your recovery phrase is safely stored, you can begin installing cryptocurrency applications through Ledger Live. Each blockchain network requires its specific app to be installed on your device before you can manage those particular cryptocurrency assets. Your Ledger device supports over 5,500 different cryptocurrencies and tokens across numerous blockchain networks.

Popular applications include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Cardano, Polkadot, and many others. The number of apps you can install simultaneously depends on your device model – the Nano S Plus can hold 3-20 apps, the Nano X can manage up to 100 apps, and the Stax offers expanded storage capacity. You can always uninstall and reinstall apps as needed without affecting your cryptocurrency holdings.

Advanced Security Features

Secure Element Technology

Ledger devices use certified secure element chips (CC EAL5+) that provide bank-level security for your private keys. These chips are tamper-resistant and designed to withstand physical attacks, ensuring your cryptocurrency remains protected even if someone gains physical access to your device.

Transaction Verification

Every transaction must be physically approved on your Ledger device, ensuring that malware on your computer cannot authorize transfers without your knowledge. The device screen displays transaction details for your verification before confirming any cryptocurrency movement.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Device Not Recognized

If your computer doesn't recognize your Ledger device, try these steps:

  • • Use a different USB port or cable
  • • Close other applications that might access the device
  • • Update your computer's USB drivers
  • • Restart Ledger Live and reconnect the device

Forgotten PIN Code

If you forget your PIN code, your device will reset after 3 incorrect attempts. Don't worry – you can restore access using your 24-word recovery phrase. This process will restore all your cryptocurrency accounts while requiring you to set a new PIN code.
